Geography

Ian Geddes has been a Principal Teacher of Geography, Deputy Head Teacher and Open University lecturer, and has written several Geography books (including Aspects of Social Geography, Aspects of Urban Geography, How to Pass Higher Geography and most recently How to Pass Exams) Ian has been commissioned by SQA to write teaching and assessment materials for Intermediate, Higher and Advanced Higher Geography

This is a one-day overview of the Higher Geography course, suitable for teachers who are new to teaching this course as well as teachers seeking new ideas and insight into the SQA system.

During the day the following topics will be covered.

• A review of the structure and assessment demands of the Higher Course
• Increasing active learning in the classroom
• Using ICT within the classroom
• Improving student motivation
• An active workshop of SQA marking and examination standards
• Revision skills including reading and writing techniques for students
• Development of a teaching Unit
• Preparation for NABs and external assessment
• Contemporary development of a Geographical theme/ topic
• Sharing techniques and ideas
